Data Select will commence deliveries for the world’s first 3D smartphone, the LG Optimus 3D, on 8 July after winning an exclusive distribution deal.

The distributor will follow the lead of Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy, who will begin selling the highly-anticipated handset in selected stores and online on 1 July.

Data Select confirmed that the LG Optimus 3D will be backed by multimillion pound marketing campaign to ‘drive consumer demand’. The distributor will also be offering marketing funding, seeding samples and training to dealers and resellers.

According to TechRadar, the video was a promotional item that showcases how the app will work on Apple's tablet. Once the video had 'broke', Skype VP of Consumer and Product Design Rick Osterloh confirmed that the app was for real, was currently in testing phase and was 'coming soon'. No idea just how soon, but as it looks pretty much complete, we shouldn't have long to wait.

Mr Osterloh confirmed that the app would offer the same functionality as the iPhone version, so if you are familiar with that, you know what to expect. Of course, there's one big difference here - screen size. The iPhone version has worked on the iPad, but it's certainly not been optimised for it. This version will be, ideal for getting up close and personal with friends and loved ones on the go and offering pretty much all the functionality of the PC/Mac versions, file sharing aside.

The US release date is said to be late November, so all being well, the unnamed handset (although certainly using the 'Nexus' name in some way) could be with us before Christmas. Google's gift to you, if you happen to be running a contract down around that time.

Nokia closing down UK online store

While it was always good for the odd exclusive and occasional deal, it seems that Nokia wasn't getting the kind of business it would like through its online store. That's pretty much the only reason why the company would close down its UK online operation.

According to Omnio, store closures in France, Spain and Holland will now be followed by the closure of its UK site. Details were leaked out via affiliate network Tradedoubler, which has informed its members that no further commissions will be paid after the June 30 date due to closure, which it says is a 'strategic business decision'.

Another report suggests that subsidies from the networks are just too great for Nokia's online store to compete. But for most consumers, that 'free phone' offer is hard to resist, even if the contract more than pays the full price over the 18 or 24-month term.

Other features of the Barcelona include a full physical QWERTY keyboard matched up with a 2.6-inch TFT touch-screen. There's also HD voice, a 3.2-megapixel camera, video calling, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity plus seven hours of talktime from a single charge.

We second-guessed as much, but now there has been confirmation of sorts that the music part of the iCloud service will not be heading to the UK anytime soon.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the September launch in the US will not be replicated in the UK, with the first quarter of 2012 tentatively mentioned as a possible date for this side of the Atlantic.

A spokesman for the Performing Right Society (PRS), which ensures that composers, songwriters and music publishers are paid for their work, told the newspaper that negotiations with Apple were at a  'very early stage'. it continued: 'The licensing team at the PRS have started talks with Apple, but are a long way off from any deals being signed…It is very much the early stages of the negotiations and is similar to the launch of iTunes – which began in the US and took a while to roll out to other countries.'

A music executive at one of the major record labels was also reported as saying: 'Tentative talks have begun between the major labels and Apple in the UK. However, all talks are at the really early stages and no one expects to see the cloud music service live on this side of the pond until 2012.'
  
The labels have yet to officially comment, no doubt wary of saying the wrong thing as negotiations progress. But backing up the potential delay, Mark Mulligan, VP and research director at Forrester Research, said: 'Apple’s cloud music service will not launch in the UK until at least quarter one of 2012. These types of negotiations take a long time… For one thing the UK arms of all the major record labels are biding their time and waiting to see how the service affects download sales in the US before they sign up to anything.'

Both Google and Amazon have launched similar services in the US in the last few weeks, none of which are planned to hit the UK either anytime soon. If that changes, we'll let you know.
